Clifford Chance Unispace Project

Clifford Chance

The client wanted wow factor...and we delivered

Trusted and creating beautiful green spaces!

We were first approached by the designer for this project, Unispace, as we had collaborated with them on many projects before. They trusted us to fulfil our section of the brief…Make an impression! Equally, we trusted them to fulfil theirs…Amazing impact on completion! They did not let us down.

The Brief.

Our client’s problem that needed solving.

After our initial consultation, we discovered this was no ordinary job. The client, Clifford Chance, wanted a green wall, moss wall, joinery, floor plants, and elevated plants in their installation. We love a challenge, and we knew we could not only support all areas of this job, but also leave the lasting impression everyone wanted.

Having previously worked with both Unispace and building company, FDC, we were confident the job would be a success. Every part of the job was well briefed and due to our sales team’s initial consultation, everything went like clockwork both internally and on site.

Large jobs like this often require many considerations, so we wanted to get it on the right track from the very beginning to make plants work in their design.

Design and Installation.

Our solution.

Firstly, our green walls were to be a major factor in creating an impression. All three created the right effect. We included varieties that we know will work in a wall of this size and with the available or appropriate lighting for each. These included the brightly coloured Lemon/Lime Deremensis, Standard Deremensis, Janet Craig, and Pothos to name a few.

Ability

One green wall was built on a curved wall, something we were able to achieve due to the use of our NextGen modular design. We ensured the lighting was adequate as this one was not directly by a window. It’s a stunning living wall and no-one walks past without being impressed.

The other two green walls are both triangular shaped, giving a geometric feel to this natural piece of living art. They are in the perfect position to get the most from the natural light from the window so less artificial lighting was needed. These are a big win for everyone and particularly the staff.

Creativity

The Moss Walls showcase some of our best work and are an incredible wow factor. They are modern, with a softness brought on by the curve in the design and delightful contrast of the green against white. We have used a variety of moss on these artworks and all of it is real moss which has been preserved. They include a range of textures and colours, including Reindeer, Plat and Ball moss. These bespoke, custom walls will not be seen anywhere else as they have been hand crafted by our own team. Our Head of Vertical and Technical Manager was the creator behind these two pieces of magic. Soft and cool to touch, they add a biophilic effect and are the talking point of the office!

Customisation

For the planter pots, we were able to paint them in our in-house paint shop in a simple matt charcoal to allow the rest of the design elements to shine through. This also tied in with the charcoal walls in parts of the design. We chose small desk pots above the kitchen to give elevation without the need for ‘hanging’ planters. The plants used were a mixture of Pothos, Lady Valentine, Zanzibar Gems, Janet Craigs and Deremensis. This gave diners something to ponder as they examined all the plant species above their heads. It’s a delightful result.

Timber was a feature in this office, and most the joinery plants were all chosen to not overpower this feature, but to help it shine. The use of small Janet Craigs, Deremensis, Zanzibar Gems and Ficus Burgundy were great choices and are all plants that will last the distance. Some areas also included Monsterio and other slightly larger plants where appropriate. One of the features of the joinery was a larger garden bed where we chose a full Ficus Lyrata to be the centrepiece, surrounded by plants that tapered down towards the outer edge. It’s a brilliant contrast in the office.

Client Outcomes.

How our client benefited from our installation.

Dealing with this client was a breeze as they allowed us to take the lead in plant choices and the other details for our part of the installation.

There were many moving parts in this installation, so again we can’t talk highly enough of the designers and building managers who were great to work with all along and aligned with our own work ethics.

This makes all the difference in both a smooth installation and best outcomes for the client. Initially, we were asked to install everything over two day shifts, however we asked if we could work at night to allow us to work unhindered. This was a significant time saver for everyone, not just our own team. It was a good move and gave our client confidence that we could deliver.

With the inclusion of so many diverse products, in different lighting and working environments, meant making good plant choices and working as a team was imperative. Everyone played their role and some of our team believe this is one of our best projects yet! It’s rewarding to know the client, designer and builder were over the moon with the final product and once again, plants have been the ‘feel good’ factor in more ways than one.
