As part of the new Furniture Pods concept, Green Design delivered an integrated planting concept across key circulation and food court zones at Winston Hills Mall. The planting softens high traffic areas, complements the warm material palette, and enhances the comfort of new seating hubs designed to support community connection and dwell time.

Winston Hills Mall engaged Green Design as part of a broader Furniture Pods upgrade led by TGC Retail, designed to refresh key seating and circulation areas throughout the shopping centre. The design direction was clear: classic detailing, a warm palette, and a welcoming atmosphere that would encourage shoppers to pause rather than simply pass through.
The challenge was to integrate planting seamlessly within newly introduced furniture pods, banquettes, and travelator zones without interrupting flow in a high traffic retail environment. The planting needed to soften hard surfaces, enhance comfort, and support longer dwell time, while remaining practical, durable, and easy to maintain. The objective was not decorative greenery, but purposeful planting that strengthens the centre’s role as a community meeting place.
Working from furniture pod layouts and planter selections predetermined by TGC Retail, our solution focused on integrating planting within the new pod environments rather than treating greenery as an add on. Planters were embedded into seating configurations and circulation zones to create natural visual anchors throughout the centre. This ensured planting became part of the pod architecture, reinforcing the warm material palette and softening the structured geometry of the furniture.
A total of 162 plants were installed across food court zones, travelator areas, centre walkways, and seating clusters. Varied plant sizes and layered selections were used to create depth while maintaining clear sightlines and safe movement. The result is a cohesive design where planting enhances comfort, supports wayfinding, and transforms transitional retail spaces into welcoming places to sit, wait, and connect.
Delivering this project required careful coordination with the broader furniture installation and retail operations. The planting had to align precisely with new pod layouts, upholstery selections, and circulation clearances while the centre remained fully operational. Installation was scheduled and staged to minimise disruption to shoppers and retailers, ensuring the upgrade felt seamless rather than intrusive.
A key component of the project involved preparing TGC-specified decorator pots and integrated planters for long-term commercial indoor use. Green Design adapted internal liners, sub-irrigation, and planting configurations to support plant health and efficient maintenance while preserving the intended aesthetic. Close coordination with joiners and installers ensured planters were correctly set within furniture pods and joinery elements, allowing safe servicing access without compromising design intent.
Beyond simple placement, the design required detailed planning to balance plant density with visibility and safety. In high traffic areas such as travelators and food court zones, planting was scaled to provide softness without obstructing flow. Back orders and staged deliveries were managed carefully to maintain consistency across the centre, resulting in a cohesive outcome across all pods and seating clusters
The creativity in this project came from treating planting as an extension of furniture design rather than an accessory. Each pod was considered a complete environment, where seating, tables, and planters worked together to shape the experience. Instead of placing isolated pots in corners, greenery was woven into banquettes, travelator planters, and seating clusters to create subtle boundaries and visual rhythm throughout the centre.
We also approached scale with intention. Larger planter formats provided structure in open areas, while grouped smaller plants added texture within more intimate seating zones. This layered approach ensured the planting felt dynamic and considered, rather than repetitive. The result is a retail environment where greenery enhances comfort, encourages dwell time, and contributes to a more human centred shopping experience.

The maintenance program for Winston Hills Mall was structured to ensure all 162 plants remain vibrant, healthy, and aligned with the design intent. Servicing is carried out discreetly within trading hours, maintaining visual standards without disrupting shoppers or retailers.
Plant selections were chosen with durability and ease of care in mind, particularly within high traffic zones such as food court banquettes and travelator areas. Ongoing monitoring ensures grooming, watering, and replacement schedules are responsive to environmental conditions and foot traffic patterns. This proactive approach preserves the visual quality of the furniture pods and ensures the planting remains healthy, vibrant, and consistent over time.
Safety was a central consideration in both the design and installation phases. All planter placements were assessed against circulation paths, travelator clearances, and emergency access routes to ensure unobstructed movement throughout the shopping centre.
